SwimBikeRun Fun Events of Texas Switches to Cal Tri Race Insurance
SwimBikeRun Fun Events, a Texas-based producer of triathlon and duathlon events, including the PinkStrong Triathlon & PinkStrong Duathlon, has shifted its race insurance coverage to the California Triathlon Race Director Insurance Program.
Camille Baptiste, Race Director at SwimBikeRun Fun Events, said “By working with California Triathlon, we are able to tackle the high costs and hassles of traditional triathlon insurance and race registration.
“Immediate administrative reporting, financial and time savings are passed onto athletes, helping us grow and expand multisport racing to new participants.”
Thom Richmond, President of California Triathlon, added “We welcome SwimBikeRun Fun Events, Camille Baptiste and her athletes to the growing list of organizations that use the California Triathlon Endorsed Race Director Insurance Program.
“Camille and her team are doing great grassroots work, and we are pleased to support them with industry leading insurance that doesn’t require sharing athletes’ personal information.”

US$60K marketing support for race directors in California Triathlon Race Director Insurance Program
The California Triathlon Race Director Insurance Program has committed US$60,000 in marketing support for race directors in 2022.
California Triathlon notes that the insurance program is a US$2.50 per athlete insurance product being used by a growing number of race directors in the United States,
The US$60,000 marketing support will be used to boost page rankings on Google for participating races in the insurance program.
“We are pleased that 100% of race directors who utilized the California Triathlon Race Director Insurance Program last year are returning in 2022,” said Thom Richmond, Founder at California Triathlon.
“These race operators almost universally saw participant growth, and these resources will help further fuel them in 2022 and beyond.”
California Triathlon cites a number of comments from participating race directors:
- “The process was seamless, and athletes saved a lot of money compared to previous years.” Patrick Hight, People Powered Sports, TX
- “The quickest I’ve ever received a Certificate of Insurance (COI) and the easiest, most streamlined process as well.” Keaton Garrett, Heartland Racing, MO
- “The best a race director can provide for their athletes.” Thierry Rouillard, Run941, FL
- “Easy, affordable, great process. Gets the athletes insured so we can compete.” Chris Jackson, Canyon Lake Triathlon, CA
California Triathlon Race Director adds that its insurance program features include:
- An insurance product that meets or exceeds almost all municipal requirements in 50 US states;
- Athletes pay significantly lower insurance fees;
- Race directors keep their athlete data 100% safe from being harvested; and
- Does not require significant technical integration.
The insurance affiliate program includes general liability, non-owned/hired auto liability and excess accident coverage. California Triathlon points out that it is… ‘not making any profit from any race director that chooses to sign up with the race insurance offering.’

2022 Cal Tri Events Water Temps & Weather Forecast
2022 CAL TRI EVENTS WATER TEMPERATURE & WEATHER FORECAST. The forecast provided is just that, a forecast. It is the best guidance we have months in advance relative to the expected air and water temperature on race day at a particular venue. We measure the water temperature both the day before the race and the morning of the race and that information is communicated to race participants.
With the rare exception, all of our races are wetsuit legal. In several cases, a wetsuit is recommended but not mandatory.
- 52.9 or below. Cancelled swim
- 53-57.9 Wetsuit is mandatory. If the water temperature is below 58 degrees. Any athlete without a wetsuit will not be allowed to compete.
- 58.0 – 64.9 Wetsuit recommended if the water temperature is between 58-65 degrees
- 65.0 – 78.0 Wetsuit is legal if the water temperature is 78 degrees or lower.
- 78.1 – 83.9 Athletes may wear wetsuits but will not be reflected in the overall results or eligible for awards.
- 84 – 88.0 Wetsuit prohibited If the water temperature is 84 degrees or above
- 88.1 or above. Cancelled swim

2022 Preview & 2021 Review
On behalf of the whole Cal Tri Events team, let me start by thanking all the volunteers and volunteer groups who made it possible for our athlete community to race in 2021. As you are likely aware, all of our volunteers got a free race entry via VOGO, Volunteer One, Get One.
We approach 2022 focused on our “safe, affordable & accessible” mission knowing we can do anything, but we can’t do everything. Below is a short synopsis of the 2022 plan which includes 52 races and clinics.
- 20 – Cal Tri Events Races. A return to almost all of this year’s venues and 10 new races including Atlanta, Big Bear, Charlotte, Columbus, Indianapolis, Raleigh, Richmond, San Antonio, Ventura & Williamsburg
- 14 Events Per Race. Triathlon, triathlon relay, runbikerun, swimbike, swimrun, swim & run at both the sprint & Olympic distances
- 2022 Cal Tri Charlottesville – 9.4.22 (Women’s Race) at only the sprint distance
- 20 In Person Swim & Transition Clinics. Get race ready with pre race swim and transition clinics Saturday morning before the race. Often a special coach, professional athlete or Olympian is in attendance to lead the training. Limited to race participants.
- 12 – Monthly Virtual Clinics. Starts January 13 hosted by uber athlete Jordan Perry & Kelly Kosmo, first-ever Women’s Collegiate Triathlon National Champion.
- 2015 Pricing Maintained Through 2022. The Cal Tri Event Board Of Directors approved maintaining “2015 pricing” for 2022 (the 7th straight year of no price increases). That is remarkable considering if a race was purchased in 2022 for $60 then in 2015 that same race would cost $51.16 or -14.7%.
Here are some of the important milestones for 2021.
- Mar 2021 – New Race Director Insurance Program from California Triathlon. Race directors from coast to coast lowered the cost of insurance to as low as $2.50 per athlete or 6x lower than the market rate while keeping athlete data secure.
- May 2021. A successful return to racing in California at Lake Perris.
- Jul 2021. Habitat For Humanity became an official Cal Tri Events Charity Partner. Athletes are able to donate or fundraise through 2022.
- Sep 2021. Three-year extension for Cal Tri Lake Monticello
- Oct 2021. Three-year extension for Cal Tri Newport Dunes
- Oct 2021. A Cal Tri Events record 1,300 athletes registered for 2021 Newport Dunes. A 44% increase over 2019. 1,000 athletes finished.
- 2021 New Venues. Austin, Charlottesville*, Crozet**, DC, Fort Worth, Lake Monticello*, Lake Perris, Walnut Creek*
- * formerly CMS
- **formerly CMS & discontinued

Three-year extension for Cal Tri Newport Dunes
Cal Tri Events and the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort in California have announced a three-year agreement for the Cal Tri Newport Dunes event, covering the 2022-2024 calendar years.
Cal Tri Events reports that registration has rapidly increased for the event: from 500 (2018), to 900 (2019), to an expected 1,500 (2021) at 2021 Cal Tri Newport Dunes, which is slated for October 31, 2021.
Following the event extension agreement the future race dates are:
- Sunday, November 6, 2022
- Sunday, November 5, 2023
- Sunday, November 3, 2024
“We are excited to continue our partnership with Cal Tri Events and host this highly successful event,” said Phil Ravenna, General Manager of Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort. “It is great to see all levels of athletes enjoying this race and pursuing a healthier lifestyle as they prepare to swim, bike and run in beautiful Newport Beach.”
Thom Richmond, Founder of Cal Tri Events, said “A combined 4,000 athletes and their entourages will descend on Newport Beach from 25-30 US states and abroad to enjoy a weekend of fun, sun and competition in one of the most desirable race locations in the US.
City spokesman John Pope added “The City of Newport Beach is pleased to welcome athletes from all across the nation to compete in the Cal Tri Events races, have fun and enjoy all that our community has to offer.”
Cal Tri Events is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission for its events to be ‘safe, affordable & accessible’.
Cal Tri Events Refund Policy & Allianz Race Protection Insurance
For most athletes the process of selecting and attending a race is pretty simple. Buy an entry and do the race. What about when life happens?
REFUND POLICY. The Cal Tri Events Refund Policy is 7 words. There are no refunds, deferrals, or transfers. It is included in online registration process. It is posted on every race page. We relaxed that in 2020 due to the global pandemic and gave athletes some great options. Still we get requests under the category “it never hurts to ask, right?” and that triage takes time from race preparations.
BUYING RACE PROTECTION IS AN OPTION. Buying a race entry without insurance is like walking a tight rope without a net. Most times you will make it but what happens when the unexpected happens. Splat! We highly recommend buying Allianz’s Event Registration Protection so that there is an option when life happens. Allianz handles them because they have the financial power and bandwidth to administer a refund program. Cal Tri Events doesn’t.
COURTESY NOTIFICATION. If you know you are not going to be able to race, we appreciate the courtesy of letting us know so you can be removed from the start list. You will not get needless notifications and some poor volunteer won’t have to waste time putting together another packet.
- Cal Tri Events Refund Policy. There are no refunds, deferrals, or transfers.
- Allianz’s Event Registration Protector. Insurance when life throws a wrench in the best plans. It is the only method to get a refund.
- DNS (Did Not Start) Notification Appreciated. If you know you aren’t going to be on the starting line, we appreciate it if you let us know.
Take this advice from someone who has purchased a $700 race entry without insurance and was unable to race. It stung and it could have been avoided.
